A Trust Fund Victims Can't Trust

David Bakkie’s story

Roseville, California. Two weeks after celebrating his 50th birthday, David underwent his most recent chemotherapy treatment, which he must do every three weeks.

This is because in September of 2005, David was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a terminal cancer caused only by asbestos. A high voltage lineman, he is a single dad with two sons, age 14 and 16. The disease will soon make it impossible for him to work.

Most mesothelioma victims do not survive more than a year after their diagnosis.

How would the asbestos bailout bill hurt David’s family?

David’s case is currently pending. If the asbestos bailout bill is enacted, his family will not have the opportunity to seek compensation for David’s medical bills. They will be forced to start the claims process from the beginning under the proposed asbestos trust fund.
