Throughout the debate over the so-called Fairness in Asbestos Injury Resolution Act, proponents of the legislation have touted the fact that all the major stakeholders have been included: the corporations that knowingly poisoned their employees and the American people, their insurance companies, the unions representing the workers, and the trial lawyers.
But where are the voices of the victims and their families, whose lives have been torn apart by exposure to this deadly substance?
On this website you will learn about real people; hard-working people who went to work every day to support their families, trusting that their employers and their government would keep them safe. Sadly, this was not the case.
If this legislation passes, many will die without any assurance that their families will be secure. Instead, they would be forced into an under-funded, unfair — and probably unconstitutional — trust fund with a “one size fits all” compensation scheme.
It is no accident that every major victim’s group is opposing this bill. It is unconscionable that these groups, and the people you will read about in this site, were never even considered as stakeholders in this process.
