A Trust Fund Victims Can't Trust

JoAnn Manske’s story

Bayview, Wisconsin. JoAnn, 59, was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a terminal cancer caused only by asbestos, in March 2004.

She was exposed to deadly asbestos fibers during her childhood when her father, a millwright in Wisconsin Rapids for 32 years, unknowingly carried asbestos fibers home on his clothing. JoAnn’s father had no way of knowing he was putting his family members at risk.

Through the course of a normal childhood, JoAnn was exposed to a product that caused a fatal form of cancer to develop.

JoAnn has been financially devastated, her entire savings wiped out. Her illness has brought physical exhaustion, preventing any chance of sustained employment.

How would the asbestos bailout bill hurt JoAnn’s family?

JoAnn’s case is pending and if the asbestos bill is enacted, she will have to start the claims process over again from scratch under the proposed asbestos trust fund. More likely than not, she would not live to recover any compensation from the fund.
