The AAJ Medtronic InFUSE® Litigation Group will address ongoing issues with this device. Medtronic InFUSE® is a kit that includes a vial of bone morphogenic protein, sponges, a syringe, and an LT-Cage. The goal of Infuse is to promote bone growth between vertebraes in order to achieve fusion. Medtronic only obtained approval from the FDA for use in patients with degenerative disc disease, inserted anteriorly, and only within one disc space between the L1-S1 vertebrae. Shortly after approval, however, Medtronic promoted the off-label use of Infuse in patients with a variety of conditions, posteriorly, and in multiple disc spaces. It is estimated that 85% of surgeries using Infuse were performed off-label. Unfortunately, the off-label use of Infuse causes an over-promotion of bone growth which leads to significant nerve damage, even paralysis. Revision surgery is the only treatment currently known. In addition, it is proposed that Infuse could also cause a variety of cancers. The Medtronic Infuse® Litigation Group member benefits include a Group Document Library, list server, and education programs.
