Message from Lawrence M. Simon, Section ChairWelcome to the Sole Practitioner and Small Firm Section homepage.  I hope that new and returning members of the section will get good use out of this site and their membership.

There are a few goals I’ve set for the coming year.  The first is to increase Section membership.  The easiest way to do this is by asking each of you to please promote our section, and more importantly, to personally recruit one new Section member.

The second is to promote networking among our members.  The Section Connection organized by AAJ is a fun event, but many of our members are also members of other sections and don’t get a true chance to discuss our unique issues or to chat with members of our Section.   As a result I’d like to start a tradition of informal Section gatherings at Conventions and when possible, AAJ Colleges and Seminars.  Any Section member (or prospective Section member) that is attending the Weekend with the Stars program in Manhattan this December, or is otherwise in the greater New York City on December 13, 2008 should e-mail me at LSimon@BergenLaw.com.  A small group of our Section Members will be dining out at a top rate Manhattan eatery within two blocks of the seminar hotel.   Anyone reading this newsletter, along with their spouse, law partner, or paralegal, are welcome to join us.

In New Orleans a larger scale, informal Section get together will also be scheduled, mostly likely for the Friday night before the Convention starts.  If you haven’t made your flight and hotel plans yet for New Orleans, please arrange for a Friday arrival.  AAJ is offering a Specialized Track Education program in New Orleans geared to the Small Firm and Sole Practitioners.  We also will be holding a Section business meeting, with details to follow.  With all the wonderful food, jazz and entertainment, shopping, and sights New Orleans has to offer, the AAJ programs and events are not be missed.

My third goal is to improve our Section’s Document Library.  We have recently added sample Retainer agreements and will add many more forms geared to the smaller office in the coming year.  Please contribute documents such as co-counsel agreements, retainer agreements, leases and sub-leases, partnership and shareholder agreements, joint venture agreements, or any other document you believe would be helpful to our section.

My fourth goal is to improve the Section’s visibility.  AAJ will be launching a new version of the website in the coming year, and our Section will have its own dedicated page.  Great news indeed!

Finally, I am excited about our Education program for the 2009 Annual Convention, which is in its beginning stages.  Details will follow in future Newsletters and on the AAJ website.
