Social Security Disability Law

This Section promotes the objectives of AAJ within the field of Social Security disability law, and to that end to research, study, and thereafter educate the membership with respect to available legal remedies; to protect the rights of claimants seeking disability insurance benefits, supplemental security income, and attendant Medicare and Medicaid coverage before the Social Security Administration; to promote and support legislation, regulation, and agency policy designed to protect claimants' rights to disability compensation and to oppose legislation which adversely affects those rights; and to present programs of continuing legal education in the area of Social Security disability law.

Message from Evan Zagoria, Section Chair

Welcome to the home page for the Social Security Section of AAJ.

We intend to maximize the value of Section membership and the commitment to AAJ. The Social Security Section consists of lawyers who represent claimants in matters for the many benefits available under the Social Security Act. The majority of claims are handled at administrative hearings before ALJ’s for SSA and are claims for denied disability benefits. However, these claims can also pertain to retirement and survivor benefits, Medicare issues, Supplemental Security Income benefits, waiver of overpayments. Many members will also handle federal court appeals of benefit denials. Because of the similarity in concepts of “disability” and medicine, many Section members also handle ERISA/LTD denials of benefits and we cooperate with the Health Care Disability Litigation Group. Our goals remain to continue to educate Section members and to help AAJ lobby for issues to benefit lawyers handling SSA claims and their clients.  I would be glad to receive suggestions for new topics to be discussed at future conventions and any other ides to improve the Section.
