The plaintiffs alleged that the patient, who suffered brain damage, had received too much morphine and was not appropriately monitored by staff at the VA hospital. They claimed that staff should have attached her to a pulse oximeter, which would have instantly detected her respiratory depression. The court awarded about $1.67 million. Atkisson v. U.S.
