Investigation finds widespread use of antipsychotic drugs in nursing homes, despite risks
Atypical antipsychotic drugs—including Seroquel, Risperdal, and Zyprexa—are widely prescribed in nursing homes for off-label uses and for patients with dementia, according to a government investigation. These drugs carry a black box warning of an increased risk of death in elderly patients with dementia. Said one trial attorney: “Our anecdotal evidence suggests that when the resident is placed on these drugs, something bad happens.”
