Strategic Plan 

WOMEN TRIAL LAWYERS CAUCUS STRATEGIC PLAN, 2010–2015

Mission Statement:  The purpose of the Caucus is to advance the admirable and selfless philosophy in AAJ’s Mission, to strive to provide positive role models as women trial lawyers, to broaden the membership base of AAJ to include women by informing them of AAJ’s membership services and Mission, to provide a support system of women lawyers to network, socialize, form professional relationships and develop female leadership for AAJ, to provide fellowship and mentorship to newly-licensed female lawyers who embark on a career of trial law, and to uphold the honor and dignity of the legal profession.

SIX GOALS:

I. Increase membership in AAJ and the WTLC
II. Activate the existing WTLC membership
III. Formalize structure of governance within  WTLC
IV. Develop leadership capabilities and opportunities for Caucus members
V. Provide mentorship to Caucus members
VI. Increase fundraising by WTLC


I. GOAL:  INCREASE MEMBERSHIP IN AAJ AND WTLC

Objective:  Increase AAJ Membership (and specifically, women AAJ members)
a. Strategy: Develop women’s caucuses within the states to activate Caucus members and increase AAJ membership
• Responsible person: WTLC Chair, WTLC State Outreach Chair

b. Strategy: Participate in AAJ wide membership efforts
• Responsible person: WTLC Chair, WTLC Membership Committee
• Timeline: Ongoing
c. Strategy: Develop liaisons from each state
• Responsible person: WTLC Chair, WTLC State Outreach Chair and Committee
• Timeline: 2012 - 2013
d. Strategy: Outreach to law students
• Responsible person: WTLC Chair, WTLC Membership Activation Committee
• Timeline: Ongoing
e. Strategy: Continue Table of 8 project

II. GOAL:  ACTIVATE EXISTING WTLC MEMBERSHIP

Objective 1:  Welcome new Caucus members
a. Strategy:  Send welcome letters to all new women AAJ members with contact information for Welcome Committee
• Responsible person: WTLC Chair, Membership Activation Committee
• Timeline: Ongoing
b. Strategy:  Attend first time attendee reception at Convention
• Responsible person: WTLC Chair, WTLC Executive Committee, Membership Activation Committee
• Timeline: Ongoing
Objective 2:  Reach out to Convention attendees
a. Strategy: Contact all women convention registrants in advance of Convention re: Caucus activities
• Responsible person: Membership Activation Committee
• Timeline: Ongoing
b. Strategy:  Attend first time attendee reception at Convention
• Responsible person: WTLC Chair, WTLC Executive Committee, Membership Activation Committee 
• Timeline: Ongoing
c. Strategy: Create buttons for officer/members of WTLC to be worn at convention as budget allows
• Responsible person: Membership Activation Committee
• Timeline: Ongoing
Objective 3:  Create more regular communication among Caucus members
a. Strategy:  Increase number of women on list serv and social media
• Responsible person: WTLC Chair, Membership Activation Committee
• Timeline: Ongoing
b. Strategy:  Use blast email to Caucus members to apprise them of Caucus activities
• Responsible person: WTLC Chair
• Timeline: Ongoing
c. Strategy:  Survey members
• Responsible person:  WTLC Chair, Executive Committee
• Timeline: Every 2 – 3 years (last completed Fall 2010)
Objective 4:  Promote business development opportunities for Caucus members
a. Strategy:  Work to increase business referrals among members (Create referral list through multi-media approaches, e.g., social media, website)
• Responsible person: WTLC Chair, Membership Activation Committee
• Timeline: 2011 -2013

III. GOAL: FORMALIZE STRUCTURE OF GOVERNANCE WITHIN WTLC

Objective 1:  Update bylaws to be consistent with AAJ bylaws, current practice and needs
• Responsible person: WTLC Chair, WTLC Executive Committee and By-laws Committee
• Timeline: 2011 -2012

Objective 2:  Increase transparency of WTLC Elections and activities
• Responsible person: WTLC Chair, WTLC Executive Committee
• Timeline: Ongoing

IV. GOAL:  DEVELOP LEADERSHIP CAPABILITIES AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR   CAUCUS MEMBERS

Objective 1:  Participate in planning and development of AAJ Diversity Leadership program
• Responsible person: WTLC Chair and WTLC Representative to Diversity Committee
• Timeline: 2011- TBD
Objective 2:  Develop a plan for nomination of qualified WTLC members for awards inside and outside of AAJ
• Responsible person: WTLC Chair, WTLC Executive Committee
• Timeline: Ongoing

V. GOAL: PROVIDE MENTORSHIP TO CAUCUS MEMBERS

Objective 1:  Develop and implement a Mentorship Program for Caucus members
• Responsible person: Mentorship Program Committee
• Timeline: 2011- 2012
Objective 2:  Evaluate, expand and improve the quality of the Mentorship program
• Responsible person: Mentorship Program Committee
• Timeline: Ongoing

VI. GOAL: INCREASE FUNDRAISING BY WTLC

Objective 1:  Establish an active fundraising committee with tri-chairs and members and establish the pyramid of contributors with history of all contributors
• Responsible person:  WTLC Chair, Fundraising Committee
• Timeline: Ongoing

Objective 2:  Increase number of WTLC PAC contributors with the following goals:
• 10% increase in number of M Club and higher PAC contributors (now at 90) by 2015
• Double number of women participating in PAC by 2015
• Responsible person: WTLC Chair, Fundraising Committee Chairs, Executive Committee
• Timeline: 2011-2015
Objective 3: Exceed all special fundraising requests made by AAJ Leadership.
