Former AAJ Board member and Nevada Justice Association Trial Lawyer of the Year Neil G. Galatz died January 3, 2013.
Born, raised, and educated (including undergraduate and law school) in New York, Neil started his legal career as a deputy district attorney in Las Vegas in 1957. An AAJ member since the early 1960s, Neil served 18 years on AAJ’s Board of Governors, chaired AAJ Convention committees, chaired the student advocacy program, and received a citation from the association in 1971 for outstanding leadership.
In addition to his activities with AAJ, Neil served as a board member of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers, as president of the Western Trial Lawyers Association, as a board member of the Nevada State Bar Association, as special advisor to the Nevada Legislative Committee of Nevada Evidence Code, as a board member of the American Board of Professional Liability Attorneys, and as a Nevada Supreme Court Settlement Conference Judge. He also received the American Bar Association Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Section Task Force on Plaintiff’s Involvement Pursuit of Justice Award in May 2008.
Neil is survived by his wife, of 51 years, Elaine; daughters, Dr. Leesa (Dr. David Finlay) Galatz of St. Louis, and Lara Galatz of Las Vegas; grandson, Ryan Finlay of St. Louis; brothers, Malcolm (Deanna) of Joseph, Ore., and Hank (Susan) Galatz of Chicago; sister, Karen (Jon Wellinghoff) Galatz of Washington, D.C.
Services were held Sunday, Jan. 6, at the King David Memorial Chapel in Las Vegas.
