AAJ Statement on the Across-Party-Lines Rejection of Senator Portman's Anti-Patient Amendment
Washington, DC — The following is a statement from American Association for Justice President Mary Alice McLarty, in response to the Senate's across-party-lines rejection of Senator Portman's amendment to limit injured patients' legal rights (S.Amdt. 152):
“We commend the Democrats, Republicans, and Independents in the Senate who stood up for patients' rights today and voted against an amendment that would remove critical incentives to improve patient safety.
“Every year, 98,000 Americans die from preventable medical errors. Instead of focusing on ending this epidemic, Senator Portman’s amendment would have protected wrongdoers, reduced accountability and left patients at risk for more injuries from negligent care.
“We urge the Senate to continue to stand up for the hundreds of thousands of patients that are injured or killed because of preventable medical errors and ensure their rights are protected.”
