Owen Gardner
Martin, SD

The Gardners (Vernon and Shawnna) lost their two-year-old son, Owen, to dehydration. His parents had initially brought him to their local doctor and were sent home with suppositories. They returned to the physician when Owen's vomiting and diarrhea continued, causing him to become extremely dehydrated. The doctor sent his parents to a hospital more than two hours away, even though a closer facility existed. Upon arrival at the hospital, Owen was admitted to the pediatric unit, where there was no specialist available. The nurse repeatedly tried to start the IV but failed. He then stopped breathing and had to be intubated, but the tube was mistakenly put in the stomach instead of the lungs.

The tube was never repositioned and Owen died that day of dehydration.
