Association of Trial Lawyers of America Elects Lewis S. “Mike” Eidson President

Friday, July 21, 2006 (Washington DC)—Lewis S. "Mike" Eidson, Jr., one of the nation’s top litigators in the fields of product safety and aviation law, has been elected to a one-year term as president of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America (ATLA), the world’s largest trial bar.

Eidson, a partner in the Coral Gables, Florida, law firm of Colson Hicks Eidson, was elevated to the post Wednesday during ATLA’s 60th annual convention in Seattle, Washington. He succeeds Ken Suggs, of Columbia, South Carolina

“It’s an honor to serve as president of a great organization willing to confront powerful interests in the public’s behalf,’’ Eidson said. “Leveling the playing field for those who are injured through no fault of their own is part of our greater responsibility to ensure that every American has access to justice.”

With about 65,000 members worldwide, ATLA promotes justice and fairness for injured persons, defends the constitutional right to trial by jury and strengthens the civil justice system through education and disclosure of information critical to public health and safety. The association provides lawyers with the information and professional assistance they need to serve clients successfully and protect the democratic values of the civil justice system.

ATLA is dedicated to preserving the civil justice system and making sure that powerful special interests are held accountable when they engage in misconduct or negligence.

"ATLA is moving forward on many levels and I'm very pleased that someone with the ability and integrity of Mike Eidson is going to be leading us for the next year,'' said Ken Suggs, the association's outgoing president.

Eidson served as lead counsel in some of the biggest automobile liability cases in the nation’s judicial history, including the Firestone/Ford tire tread separation case and litigation involving the Chrysler Minivan. In 1975, Eidson and two of his partners prevailed in the first case where it was determined Ford continued manufacturing the Pinto even though the company knew it had a high probability of exploding on rear impact.

Eidson has handled hundreds of product liability cases nationwide. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of South Carolina in 1968 and his law degree from Emory University Law School in 1971. He also attended Warwick University in Coventry, England.

In addition to his professional activities, Eidson serves as president of the Miami City Ballet and is active in many cultural and charitable organizations in South Florida.

Also elected were: Kathleen Flynn Peterson, President-Elect; Les Weisbrod, Vice President; Anthony Tarricone, Secretary; C. Gibson Vance, Treasurer; and Gary Paul, Parliamentarian.
