AAJ Statement in Response to Washington Post Editorial

Washington, DC – Beyond the illegal conduct engaged in by prominent lawyers, the real tragedy of these scandals is that they divert attention from the fact that a robust civil justice system is the last line of defense against corrupt corporate executives and Wall Street moguls [“A Fall and a Lesson,” Editorial, April 9]. Sadly, by violating the law themselves, a handful of lawyers are now serving the public relations interests of those who want to eviscerate the civil justice system in order to avoid being held accountable to the millions of individuals they have wronged by their greed and misconduct. Illegal conduct is unacceptable whether you’re a trial attorney or a corporate CEO.

American Association for Justice (AAJ) believes all illegal conduct should be condemned and punished. Further, AAJ is committed to a strong code of conduct that requires ethical behavior by all members.

Alongside the right of all Americans to a trial by jury is the expectation that trial attorneys adhere to all legal and ethical standards. Attorneys who do not adhere to those high standards should be subject to the justice system as anyone else.
