AAJ Shames Congress for Protecting Negligent Foreign Corporations

October 27— The U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 420 today, a bill that would limit where an injured consumer can file a lawsuit and prevents some foreign corporations who sell unsafe products from being held accountable in U.S. courts. Full Press Release

Georgia Court Overturns Chamber of Commerce-Backed “Tort Reform;” AAJ Applauds Effort

September 23— the Superior Court of Gwinnett County in the State of Georgia overturned a key element of the recently-passed Georgia bill to limit access to the courts. AAJ President Ken Suggs applauded the court's decision saying, "so-called 'tort reforms' like this one are blatant attempts by big corporations to tilt the legal playing field in their favor and against average Americans. Caps on Medical Malpractice Damages Unconstitutional, Wisconsin Supreme Court

July 14—Today the Wisconsin Supreme Court struck down the state's caps on non-economic (so-called pain and suffering) damages in medical malpractice cases, saying they bear no "rational" relationship to lower malpractice insurance premiums. The Court also called such limits "unreasonable and arbitrary" because they negatively impact the most severely injured patients. Full Press Release

Republican Testimony Before Small Business Committee Shows Access to Justice is Not a Partisan Issue

June 21—Mississippi trial lawyer Wil Colom, co-chair of AAJ's Republican Caucus, presented a conservative case against limits on compensation for medical malpractice victims at a House Small Business Committee hearing, demonstrating that ensuring all Americans have access to justice is an issue that cuts across party lines.
