Drug Safety News
Vioxx Press Kit
Vioxx is estimated to be responsible for as many as 55,000
deaths.
Laws that hold drug makers accountable send a powerful message
to industry executives that they can't endanger lives and get
away with it.
Yet, just before a jury found Merck guilty of knowingly marketing
a deadly drug and causing the untimely death of Robert Ernst,
the company's friends in Congress passed legislation
that would absolve them from responsibility in future cases.
The U.S. Senate should stop this giveaway in its tracks. Merck
executives are unworthy of any special treatment. To date, they
refuse to take responsibility and apologize for their actions
- which include training their drug reps to "dodge"
questions from physicians about the cardiac risks of the drug,
and launching a campaign
of intimidation against doctors who dared speak out about
the risks of their drug.
