A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO PUBLIC ADJUSTERS

Property loss adjustment is the process by which agreement is reached between an insurer and its insured regarding the value of a claim under a policy of insurance covering real property, personal property and related coverages such as business interruption and extra expense. The process is well described in Thomas & Reed, Adjustment of Property Losses (4th ed. 1977):
On receiving notice of loss, the insurer inquires into the circumstances of the occurrence and investigates the propriety of the claim. If it is found there is liability, negotiations are commenced to harmonize opposing viewpoints and issues in contention and to establish the amount of loss and the proportion of that loss for which the insurer is liable under the terms of the policy. When these negotiations result in an agreement, the insured and the insurer are said to make an adjustment.
