Accommodations for Diversity

In these difficult economic times, many lawyers and law firms are considering diversifying their practices. Before you forge ahead into new territories, however, you might do well to consider some of the factors that go into working with new categories of clients.

For simplicity, this article considers “diverse” clients to be anyone who is not just like you – whether in mobility, language, education, emotional stability, intelligence, or visual acuity.

Although you may know the relevant law, you would be wise to consider additional factors that will arise in working with these new clients. Obvious practice areas that are likely to include some, if not all, of the clients mentioned above include:

International product liability cases are very challenging, complex and can be resonant of a crossover civil procedure/constitutional law/torts/conflict of laws bar exam question. Whether the subject matter of the action occurred in the United States or abroad, it is incumbent upon the litigator to be very well versed, not only with the applicable United States substantive and procedural laws and treaties, but also with the applicable laws, treaties, customs, practices and procedures of the international jurisdictions which may be implicated. With the continued globalization and outsourcing of product manufacturing, international product liability cases will become more and more common.
