AAJ Statement on Introduction of the "End Double Taxation of Successful Consumer Claims Act"

June 13,2020

Washington, DC — The following is a statement from American Association for Justice CEO Linda Lipsen following the introduction of the “End Double Taxation of Successful Consumer Claims Act”  so that individuals who win fraud or abuse cases against corporations are not taxed on the funds awarded to their attorney:

“Trial attorneys are committed to pursuing justice for their clients, and when victims of corporate abuse are successful in a case they shouldn’t be taxed twice on what they recover,” said Linda Lipsen, CEO of the American Association for Justice. “This unjust policy can cause serious financial hardship for Americans at an already difficult time in their lives, but fortunately Congress can make this right. I commend Senator Catherine Cortez Masto and Representatives Steven Horsford and Hank Johnson for leading the charge to end this double taxation, and call on Congress to pass the ‘End Double Taxation of Successful Consumer Claims Act’ for the sake of all those harmed by this unbalanced, unfair policy.”
