Carmelo Rodriguez Military Medical Accountability Act Will Fix the Feres Doctrine
The Carmelo Rodriguez Military Medical Accountability Act (S. 1347 / H.R. 1478), sponsored by Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) and Rep. Maurice D. Hinchey (D-NY), would amend the Federal Tort Claims Act to provide well-deserved protection to service members who honorably serve and protect our country, allowing them to hold negligent government health care providers accountable. This legislation, which has cleared the House Commercial and Administrative Law Subcommittee, will restore the rights that were originally granted to servicemembers by Congress. This bill would not apply to injuries sustained during combat. This important piece of legislation will ensure that servicemembers are not penalized for their service to our country by being stripped of fundamental rights granted to every other American.
