Message from Adele P. Kimmel, Section ChairDear Section Members:

The Civil Rights Section’s leadership has been busy planning for the upcoming Annual Convention in San Francisco, on the heels of a successful Winter Convention in New Orleans.  Our business meeting in New Orleans was lively and well-attended.  Indeed, it was the first time in a long time that we filled a room for one of our business meetings, and we are hoping to repeat this strong showing in San Francisco.  As we did in New Orleans, we’ll devote part of our next business meeting to a “bring your files” discussion of participants’ cases.

Our half-day CLE program in San Francisco promises to be particularly exciting and informative.  It will include the presentation of the Leonard Weinglass in Defense of Civil Liberties Award to renowned civil rights attorney Fred Gray, who played a pivotal role in dismantling segregation in the State of Alabama.  His clients have included Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, and the victims of the Tuskegee Syphyllis Study.  Mr. Gray will also do a presentation as part of our CLE program – a must-see for all Section members!  Our program will also include our annual Supreme Court Update, as well as presentations on valuing excessive force cases, litigating sexual abuse in custody cases, and handling medical neglect and abuse cases on behalf of immigrant detainees.

I look forward to seeing you in San Francisco!

Sincerely,

Adele P. Kimmel
