Congratulations to 2005 Paralegal of the Year Recipient Julie L. McLaughlin
Julie L. McLaughlin, of the law firm Wallace, Barozzini, Harvey & Zimmaro, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, has been selected as this year's AAJ Paralegal of the Year Award recipient. The award, sponsored by Thomson West, honors an AAJ paralegal affiliate who demonstrates commitment to the profession and dedication to AAJ's mission. Julie will receive an all expenses paid trip to AAJ's Annual Convention in Toronto, Canada.
Julie began her career as a legal secretary in a sole practitioner's office. In 1982, she became actively involved in the Pittsburgh Legal Secretaries Association, serving in several leadership positions (including President for two years). Julie received several honors while working as a legal secretary, including Pittsburgh's Junior Legal Secretary of the Year Award, the state of Pennsylvania's similar award, and the 1984 Legal Secretary of the Year for the Pittsburgh chapter.
While working as a legal secretary with Wallace, Chapas & Associates, Julie decided to further her career and pursue her Paralegal Certification through Penn State's Continuing Education Program. Not only was she working full-time—Julie was also pregnant with her first child! Julie received her certification with distinction in August of 1985; she has been working as a paralegal at Mr. Wallace's law firm since. Through 1995-1999, Julie assisted the National Association of Legal Secretaries by teaching the "Legal Secretary Course" as well as the "Advanced Course."
Julie remains active in her church, home-school association, neighborhood, and community. She was recently a member of the North Strabane Township Agriculture Security Advisory Committee and is a current member of her Homes Association's Community Day Committee.
