Insurance Company Greed

An Industry Putting Profits Over Policyholders

In the News

"When my insurance bill arrived for renewal, the premium had gone up. Since neither my wife, our kids nor I had ever filed a claim, had an auto accident or even gotten a traffic ticket, I wanted an explanation. I called AIG—my insurer of 10 years and the company that just a few weeks later would require a $123 billion taxpayer-funded bailout...Unbeknownst to me, that call was apparently logged as a claim—and one that was denied, to boot. This black mark resulted in my losing my “claims-free” discount, leading to higher insurance rates."

AARP The Magazine, 10/27/08

"A report from the American Association for Justice found AIG to be the third worst insurer in America, with Allstate ranking as the worst. So it's only fitting that former Allstate CEO Edward Liddy has been tapped to take over AIG. While at Allstate, Liddy set the bar for corporate abuse of policyholders and using hardball tactics to deny claims."

"Gasoline prices are well above last year’s levels, and people are driving less. That would suggest fewer crashes, and a little relief for the struggling American consumer, in the form of lower auto insurance premiums. But instead, many insurers are raising their rates, sometimes by large amounts."
"Driving Is Down, but Auto Insurance Rates Are Rising,"
New York Times, 08/23/08

Too often, insurance companies refuse to pay fair and just claims to policyholders.  When they do, the only way to hold them accountable is through the civil justice system. Many insurance companies refuse to pay just claims, employ hardball tactics against policyholders, reward executives with extravagant salaries, and raise premiums while hoarding excessive profits.  At the same time, the insurance industry has enjoyed its highest yearly profits ever, all at the expense of consumers. AAJ has conducted extensive research to examine insurance company greed and how consumers can hold them accountable.
