October 2021Alexis Johnson, a 17-year-old girl who is white, worked at a meatpacking plant. Over the course of several months, she was called sexually derogatory names in Spanish by her coworkers and supervisors. She also was sent home early and was treated differently from her Hispanic coworkers. After nothing was done to stop this behavior, despite her complaints, Johnson quit her job. She soon obtained other employment at a higher salary.
Johnson filed suit against Golden Valley Natural, LLC, alleging sexual and racial harassment.
The jury awarded approximately $232,700, including $150,000 in punitive damages. The parties settled confidentially following posttrial motions.
