Washington, DC — The following is a statement from American Association for Justice CEO Linda Lipsen regarding Uber’s announcement that the company will no longer force sexual assault survivors into forced arbitration:

“AAJ strongly supports sexual assault survivors having access to a public courtroom to seek accountability, however, nothing in current law prevents companies like Uber from changing policy and forcing victims and consumers into arbitration at any time in the future. Unless Congress acts to protect the rights of all Americans whose stories might not be gripping the headlines, we are subject to the whims of corporations to decide what is in the public’s interest. Until the law is changed, thousands of Americans will continue to have their rights stripped away in silence.

“No one should ever be at the mercy of the corporation who hurt them. That is why we’re calling on Congress to pass comprehensive legislation to restore the constitutional rights of all Americans to take their cases to court.”
