Speaker Ryan's Healthcare Plan Largely Picked From Recycle Bin

Includes Provisions Taking Away Patient Rights and Accountability for Medical Errors

June 22,2016

Washington, DC— The following is a statement from American Association for Justice CEO Linda Lipsen in response to House Speaker Paul Ryan’s release of the House GOP healthcare plan:

“Taking away millions of Americans’ healthcare coverage is a poor idea, and thankfully this plan will not advance.

Just last month, a study in a leading journal found that medical errors are the third leading cause of death in the United States. Yet the Ryan plan proposes to chip away at the legal rights of patients who are harmed, rather than trying to reduce these errors in the first place. It’s no wonder that similar schemes that would reduce accountability faced bipartisan opposition from lawmakers earlier this year.

Congress should work on protecting patients and consumers, not taking away their healthcare and their legal rights.”
