Failure to replenish potassium level

September/October 2023

Doe, 55, suffered from Type 2 diabetes. One morning, she was rushed to a hospital ER, where she was diagnosed as having ketoacidosis and hypokalemia. At the time of her admission, her potassium was critically low. Despite this, hospitalists allegedly administered insulin.

Doe’s potassium level dropped throughout the day, and she coded in the early evening. Resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.

Doe is survived by her spouse and adult children.

Suit against an undisclosed defendant alleged liability for the hospitalists’ failure to examine Doe and replenish her potassium level before administering insulin.

The parties settled for $1 million.
