Verdicts and Settlements: Employment Law
FEHA violations
May 2017Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Sgt. Wayne Guillary, a 34-year veteran, spoke publicly about racial issues within the department and had once settled a discrimination suit with his employer. He later began to experience retaliation after being outspoken about improper department activities and continued racial injustices within the LAPD. This included being subject to demeaning comments; receiving deficiency notices; and being demoted unjustifiably from a watch commander, which hindered his ability to earn a living.
Guillary sued the city, alleging discrimination, harassment, and retaliation in violation of the Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA).
The parties settled for $500,000, including an agreement that the plaintiff will retire from the police force and not seek future employment with the city.
