Congressman Kennedy speaks at Leadership Luncheon
October 2017Rep. Joe Kennedy III (D-Mass.) addressed members at the 2017 Annual Convention Leadership Luncheon. As the event’s keynote speaker, Kennedy, a former assistant district attorney in Massachusetts, discussed the indispensable role that the law plays in protecting all people, especially in today’s divisive political climate. “We know that, at its foundation, our justice system is built not just on words but on a promise we make to each other: that we will be treated fairly whether we are strong or weak, good or bad, rich or poor,” he said.
Kennedy also highlighted how trial lawyers are fundamental to safeguarding equal access to justice. “[They] know the human consequences of a society without remedies. Of closed doors that need to be pried open. . . . Of everyday people fighting through the challenges of everyday American life.” He noted that many people across the country have lost faith in government, and that because of this, standing up for people’s rights and ensuring that all voices are heard is critical—and that trial lawyers are particularly well-suited to that mission.
Kennedy concluded with a call to action: “[T]o say that we need the voices in this room involved in the fight would be an understatement. We need you leading the fight.”
