Negligent turn by bus driver

August 2024

Nazda Dumont, 32, was driving on a northbound street in Jersey City, N.J. While she was stopped in traffic near a construction site, bus driver Hernan Giraldo-Lopez made a lefthand turn, striking the rear driver’s side of Dumont’s vehicle. Dumont suffered serious injuries in the collision, including bulging disks at C5-7 and a herniated disk at L4-5. She underwent two shoulder surgeries and continues to suffer neck, back, and bilateral shoulder pain.

Dumont sued Giraldo-Lopez and Community Lines, Inc., alleging Giraldo-Lopez negligently failed to make a turn wide enough for the bus he was operating.

The jury awarded $10 million.

Citation: Dumont v. Giraldo-Lopez, No. HUD-L-399-20 (N.J. Super. Ct. Hudson Cnty. Nov. 14, 2023).

Plaintiff counsel: Jason Lesnevec, New York City.
