Failure to keep a proper lookout

June 2024

Kristopher Langley, 34, was stopped in his sedan at a red light on an exit ramp from an interstate highway when Venus Jones suddenly rear-ended him in her sedan. Langley suffered injuries to his left ankle, ribs, and cervical and lumbar spinal regions. His medical expenses totaled over $51,600, and he anticipates future expenses for spinal injections.

Langley sued Jones, alleging she failed to obey traffic control devices, failed to keep a proper lookout, was driving while distracted, failed to yield, and was driving too fast for conditions. The plaintiff did not claim lost income.

The jury awarded $1.6 million.

Citation: Langley v. Jones, No. 22SL-CC007-7 (Mo. Cir. Ct. St. Louis Cnty. Dec. 6, 2023).

Plaintiff counsel: AAJ member Andrew C. Mundwiller, St. Louis.
