Retaliation, discrimination

September 19, 2024

Paul Campos, a tenured law professor at the University of Colorado-Boulder, allegedly learned that a pay study revealed he was being underpaid because of his ethnicity. Shortly after, his department notified him that he was receiving a very low annual review score. He met with Dean Lolita Buckner Inniss and asked for an explanation of his low rating. Inniss allegedly said she was not going to independently evaluate the recommendation. Campos, through his attorney, sent a letter to the university’s in-house counsel, complaining that he had been mistreated based on his ethnicity and because he criticized the purported misconduct of university officials.

Inniss subsequently removed Campos from his committee assignment, and he was told he was being removed from teaching property law for the upcoming semester. He also was notified that he had received a below-average merit raise based on his past performance.

Campos sued the university, alleging retaliation and pay discrimination based on race.

The parties settled for $160,000.
