Late diagnosis of lymphoma

August 8, 2019

Sohila Zarandy, 65, had a history of angioedema attacks. She consulted the clinical allergy and immunology department at UCLA Medical Center and later underwent a blood test, which indicated possible lymphoma. She was treated for swelling but continued to experience swelling attacks in her hands, throat, genitals, face, and extremities, necessitating multiple hospitalizations. More than three years later, she was diagnosed as having marginal zone lymphoma.

Zarandy and her husband sued The Regents of the University of California, alleging liability for its providers’ failure to timely diagnose lymphoma. The plaintiffs claimed that the defendant’s providers never informed her she had lymphoma despite the abnormal test results.

The defense countered that Zarandy was informed of the test results and should have been more proactive in her care.

The parties settled for $250,000.
