N. John Bey
Candidate for Treasurer
I am honored to announce my candidacy for Treasurer of the American Association of Justice. I've spent my entire legal career as a trial lawyer. I have fought for client rights in the courtroom, the state capital, and the nation's capital. My work toward advancing these aims through AAJ’s mission has been a true highlight of my career.
It has been an honor to serve as AAJ Parliamentarian. I have traveled to state capitals and Washington, D.C, to lobby for our clients' rights every year since 2011. I consider it a personal honor to stand with you and answer the call to service every year. It is an organizational honor that AAJ strives to keep an open courthouse for citizens whom our court system has at times failed, forgotten, and forsaken. In addition to fighting to keep the courthouse doors open for our clients, I have traveled from state to state, championing the AAJ message to help fight tort reform at the state level.
As a member of AAJ's National College of Advocacy Board of Trustees from 2014 to 2020, I've helped design our education programs to train trial lawyers to better advocate for our clients in the courtroom. I've taught at hundreds of educational events across the country and reached thousands of attorneys. Through these endeavors with AAJ, I have made every effort to build a stronger trial bar nationally and locally. Through these travels, I've learned as much as I've taught, and I am confident we are stronger as a group than ever before.
As a trustee of the Pound Civil Justice Institute, my service has helped give judges, legal educators, and the public a balanced view of the issues affecting the U.S. civil justice system. My role as trustee has allowed me to work on the Civil Justice Institute’s Judicial Forum for State and Appellate Court Judges and the Pound Civil Justice Institute’s Academic Symposiums. The Institute's Judicial Forum is the consumer attorney's most extensive and most significant annual program for the judiciary. The Institute's Academic Symposium generates new empirical research and law review articles supporting the civil justice system. I am proud of these efforts and believe they will only help to strengthen the right to trial by jury for years to come.
With respect to membership and recruitment, I've traveled across the country recruiting members for AAJ. This year, I hosted a membership drive at my office. As a past Chair of our Membership Oversight Committee, I am ecstatic that we are recruiting members at a record-setting pace this year. It is inspiring to see our growth in the recruitment of entire firms (the annual firm billing initiative). While many other organizations have struggled, we have remained strong in membership and adapted to grow stronger in areas we had never thought possible.
Our AAJ caucuses have done fantastic work over the last year. I am delighted with our member education, engagement, and recruitment results. As a past chair of the Minority Caucus, I have had the honor of organizing one of the largest Minority Caucus Lobby Day events we have hosted. I am a proud sponsor of the Minority Caucus, New Lawyers Division (NLD), Women Trial Lawyers Caucus, and the LGBT Caucus. I have worked with these caucuses throughout the years in membership recruitment and education. I am particularly proud to be the youngest recipient of the Minority Caucus Lifetime Achievement Award and the inaugural winner of the New Lawyer Division’s Elise Sanguinetti Award for representing the highest level of service to the NLD.
It will be a great honor to serve as your Treasurer. While the mission of AAJ is not an easy lift, I pledge to continue striving to realize that mission and fight every day for our clients, our mission, and our ideals.
