About the Program:

If you have voir dire, then you have to attend AAJ Education’s Voir Dire Workshop. You’ll learn trial-tested techniques from nationally-recognized faculty and gain hands-on experience from two mock juries.

  • Learn critical communication and listening skills from leading trial consultants

Invited Faculty:

Lisa Blue, J.D., Ph.D.

Lisa Blue, J.D., Ph.D., is a past president of the American Association for Justice (AAJ), and in January 2020 she became the first female President of the National Trial Lawyers. In 2019, Ms. Blue was a finalist for the Public Justice Trial Lawyer of the Year award. She has been named one of the Top 100 Most Influential Lawyers in America; Top 50 Women Litigators in the U.S. by the National Law Journal; Top 50: Women Texas Super Lawyer; Top 100: Dallas/Fort Worth Super Lawyer; and Top 100: Texas Super Lawyer. Ms. Blue co-authored Blue’s Guide to Jury Selection (AAJ Press/West) and has received Diplomate status in AAJ’s National College of Advocacy Masters of Trial Law professional recognition program. Ms. Blue is a generous PAC Eagle donor, and Baron and Blue, PLLC, a Leaders Forum member, is located in Dallas, Texas.

Doris Cheng

Doris Cheng has been ranked as one of the Top 50 Women Lawyers in Northern California, is the Program Director of the National Institute for Trial Advocacy’s Western Region Advocacy Teacher Training Program, is the current President (former Secretary) of the San Francisco Bar Association, and immediate Past President of the San Francisco Trial Lawyers Association. Ms. Cheng is a co-author of the eminent Rutter Group California Practice Guide on Personal Injury, and the trial practice guide, Mastering the Mechanics of Civil Jury Trials. Ms. Cheng is a Shareholder at Walkup, Melodia, Kelly, and Schoenberger in San Francisco, California.

Michael P. Doyle, Course Advisor

Michael P. Doyle, course advisor, focuses his practice in personal injury, insurance, admiralty, maritime, and workplace injury litigation. He is a past president of the Houston Trial Lawyers Association; he serves on AAJ’s NCA Board of Trustees; he is an AAJ PAC Platinum M CLUB donor; and he has received Diplomate status in the NCA Masters of Trial Law professional recognition program. He is also a member of the American Board of Trial Attorneys (ABOTA) and the Texas Trial Lawyers Association. Doyle LLP, an AAJ Leaders Forum member, has offices in Houston and Galveston, Texas and Phoenix, Arizona.

Martha Marie Eastman

Martha Marie Eastman concentrates her practice in the areas of nursing home and medical negligence.  She is a past chair of AAJ’s Nursing Home Litigation Group and the author of Establishing Relief for the Most Innocent of All AIDS Victims: Liability for Perinatal Transmission of AIDS.  Ms. Eastman is a frequent speaker on issues regarding nursing home abuse and neglect, as well as trial advocacy, deposition techniques, and medical negligence.  The Eastman Law Office is located in Louisville, Kentucky.

Christopher J. O'Brien, Course Advisor

Christopher J. O’Brien, course advisor, concentrates his practice in representing seriously injured people. He is a member of the Million Dollar Advocates Forum, has a 10.0 AVOO rating, and was listed in the Buffalo Law Journal’s Legal Elite’s Top 10: Best of the Best. He is a past president of the Western Affiliate of the New York State Trial Lawyers Association (NYSTLA), is a past co-chair of AAJ’s NCA Board of Trustees, and has received Diplomate status in AAJ’s NCA Masters of Trial Law professional recognition program. Mr. O’Brien is an AAJ PAC M Club donor. He is a partner at O’Brien & Ford, PC, which is located in Buffalo, New York.

Robert Ray, J.D., Ph.D

Robert Ray, J.D., Ph.D. is the founder and CEO of Veritas Research, L.P. As a trial consultant, Dr. Ray brings a wealth of experience to the table, both as a trial consultant and as a trial attorney. Since 1998, Dr. Ray has provided research and courtroom consulting to attorneys in cases throughout the United States. His consulting, theme development and strategy advice has been sought by attorneys representing individual plaintiffs to Fortune 500 defendants in national mass tort litigation. He has provided research and consulting advice in mass tort actions such as tobacco and pharmaceutical litigation to insurance disputes and entertainment and publishing cases. Dr. Ray is a member of the American Society of Trial Consultants and the American Psychology and Law Society.

Laura E. G. Tamez

Laura E. G. Tamez is a shareholder with the Herrera Law Firm, where she has a civil litigation practice to include cases relating to construction injury/oil rig litigation, medical malpractice and 18-Wheeler crashes.  She has dedicated much of her practice to representing injured workers and their families. Ms. Tamez is Past President of the San Antonio Trial Lawyers Association and was a founding member of the Bexar County Justice PAC of SATLA. She is Past Secretary-Treasurer of the Texas Trial Lawyers Association’s and serves on its Board of Directors and Executive Committee. Ms. Tamez attended Texas A&M University where she received her Bachelor of Science in Psychology. She then received her J.D. at St. Mary’s University School of Law. Ms. Tamez was born in Brownsville, Texas.

Michelle Simpson Tuegel

Michelle Simpson Tuegel has a national practice handling wrongful death, personal injury, and civil sexual abuse and assault cases. A former world-ranked athlete in slalom water skiing, Tuegel now uses that competitive drive and intensity to champion clients’ cases.  She was named to The National Trial Lawyers: Top 25 Women Trial Lawyers (2019), Top 100 Trial Lawyers (2014-2020) and Top 40 under 40 (2017-2020); D Magazine’s Best Lawyers Under 40 in Dallas in 2020; and to the Texas Rising Stars list, the Up-and-Coming 100 lawyers, and Up-and-Coming 50 Women lawyers. Ms. Tuegel served on the board of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (2016-2018), and she currently serves on the honorary board of the Texas Advocacy Project and the Executive Committee of the National Trial Lawyers.  Michelle is a partner at Simpson Tuegel in Dallas, Texas.

Robert Swafford

Robert Swafford is the founder and owner of Strike for Cause Jury Consulting, as well as the creator of the Strike for Cause Method of Jury Selection. Mr. Swafford attended Baylor University where he received his B.A. in Economics and his J.D. from Baylor Law School. He has extensive training in powerful listening and effective speaking, as well as expertise in the field of ontology. Ontology provides the foundation for the Strike for Cause system. Mr. Swafford has lectured on the subject of effective Voir Dire at seminars sponsored by the State Bar of Texas, Texas Trial Lawyers’ Association, and numerous other local bar associations.

MCLE/NCA Requirements:

AAJ has filed for MCLE credit in the appropriate jurisdictions.  Registered participants can receive CLE* credits depending on the jurisdiction and will be applied to your participation in AAJ’s professional recognition program. AAJ Education programs are routinely accredited by states requiring continuing legal education. Cancellations received in writing on or before February 6, 2020 will result in a refund less a 10% administrative charge or a voucher for 100% of the registration fee, which may be applied toward any AAJ Education college, seminar, or webinar held within one calendar year of the date of issue. Cancellations received in writing February 7-21, 2020 will result in a voucher for 100% of the registration fee, with the same restrictions mentioned above. Requests for refunds or vouchers received after February 21, 2020 will not be honored. AAJ is not responsible for any room cancellation fees or other travel fees which result from your cancellation.
