Dov Apfel, course advisor

Dov Apfel has been practicing law for 38 years and is known throughout the United States as a child advocate, who is routinely asked by families and lawyers to represent children with Cerebral Palsy and other injuries in obstetrical cases. He is a recipient of the Dan Cullan Memorial Lifetime Achievement Award from the Birth Trauma Litigation Group of the American Association for Justice (AAJ). Mr. Apfel is a frequent lecturer and has been invited to teach judges, doctors, nurses, and lawyers how to evaluate standard of care and causation issues throughout the United States. He has authored numerous articles, including two major law review articles concerning how to prove that a child suffered irreversible brain damage during labor and delivery. He has been selected as one of the Best Lawyers in America and recognized as a SuperLawyer in both Maryland and the District of Columbia. He is a member of the American Association for Justice (AAJ), a former chair of AAJ’s Birth Trauma Litigation Group, donates to AAJ PAC, and a former founding Chair of Maryland’s Medical Negligence Group. Mr. Apfel is a partner with Janet, Jenner & Suggs, LLC, an AAJ Leaders Forum member, located in Baltimore, Maryland.

Paul A. Casi, II

Paul A. Casi, II concentrates his practice in medical negligence, products liability, trucking cases, and in cases involving catastrophic personal injuries. He is a past chair of the American Association for Justice (AAJ) Professional Negligence Section, past cochair of the AAJ Birth Trauma Litigation Group, and an active member of the AAJ Medical Negligence Information Exchange, Interstate Trucking Litigation, Traumatic Brain Injury, and Railroad Litigation Groups.  He is the past President of the Kentucky Justice Association and a member of the  Indiana Trial Lawyers Association. He is “AV” rated by Martindale-Hubbell and is listed in Best Lawyers in America and Super Lawyers. He is a frequent lecturer on topics such as medical negligence, hospital liability, birth injury cases, accident reconstruction, and trucking litigation. In 2015, he was honored to receive the Daniel Cullan Memorial award from the AAJ Birth Trauma Litigation Group. He has also been listed, Best Lawyers in America from 2008-2016. Mr. Casi founded Paul A. Casi, II, P.S.C., located in Louisville, Kentucky.

John A. Lancione

John A. Lancione concentrates his practice in medical negligence, birth injuries, wrongful death, and personal injuries.  He is a past president of the Ohio Association for Justice, where he also served on the Board of Trustees and Executive Committee.  Mr. Lancione is “AV” rated by Martindale-Hubbell and has been named a Super Lawyer from 2004 -2017.  He is a past chair of the American Association’s (AAJ) Birth Trauma Litigation Group and past AAJ Professional Negligence Section Chairman.  Mr. Lancione generously donates to AAJ PAC. Mr. Lancione is an attorney with The Lancione Law Firm, located in Rocky River, Ohio.

Katie Leon Guerrero, RN

Katie Leon Guerrero, R.N. a registered nurse, certified in Inpatient Obstetrics, and Fetal Monitoring. She is also a verified Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) Fetal Heart Monitoring Instructor.  She has more than 18 years of healthcare experience and has worked in Obstetric and Neonatal nursing since 2001. Ms. Leon Guerrero helped to open the High Risk Obstetrics Unit at my hospital at Carolinas Healthcare System. She has worked various jobs within the nursing field, including Clinical Supervisor, but she most enjoys working hands-on with High Risk Obstetric patients. Ms. Leon Guerrero’s nursing background includes Critical Care and Brain and Spinal Cord Injury nursing. She received her Legal Nurse Consultant training through Duke University and Nursing Degree from Louise Harkey School of Nursing at Cabarrus College of Health Sciences. Ms. Leon Guerrero is the owner of Bridge Pointe Nurse Consulting, PLLC, located in Harrisburg, North Carolina. She is also a Registered Nurse within the High Risk Obstetrics unit at Carolinas Healthcare System.

Isobel S. Thomas

Isobel S. Thomas has more than two decades of experience representing a wide range of clients in a variety of practice areas, specializing in medical malpractice, personal injury, birth injury, brain injury, nursing home malpractice, and wrongful death cases. She is particularly passionate about representing infants who have been injured during birth, and has relentlessly sought justice for these small clients for the majority of her career. She is the immediate past co-chair of the American Association for Justice’s (AAJ) Birth Trauma Litigation Group (BTLG). She has been named, 5280 Magazine, Denver’s Top Lawyers (2015-2017), Texas Rising Star, Texas Super Lawyers (2014) and The Best Lawyers in America, Medical Malpractice Law – Plaintiffs (2013, 2015-2016). Charles J. Zauzig, III, course advisor

Charles J. Zauzig, III concentrates his practice on medical malpractice litigation.  Mr. Zauzig is an avid student and teacher of critical thinking as it applies to the strategies of case development and communication to juries, and he teaches nationwide. Mr. Zauzig is a past president of the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association. He is an active member of the American Association for Justice (AAJ), where he has served in several leadership positions, including on the National College of Advocacy (NCA) Board of Trustees, the Board of Governors, and as co-chair of the Medical Information Exchange Litigation Group (MNIEG). He is a fellow of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers. Cancellations received in writing February 23-27, 2018 will result in a voucher for the entire registration fee, which may be applied toward any AAJ Education college, seminar, or webinar held within one calendar year of the date of issue. Requests for refunds or vouchers received after February 27, 2018 will not be honored. AAJ is not responsible for any room cancellation fees or other travel fees which may result from your cancellation.
