AAJ Statement on House Judiciary Committee Markup of the Furthering Asbestos Claim Transparency Act

February 15,2017

Washington, DC—The following is a statement from American Association for Justice CEO Linda Lipsen in response to today's markup of the “Furthering Asbestos Claim Transparency (FACT) Act of 2017” [H.R. 906] in the U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee:

“With nearly 15,000 Americans suffocating every year from horrific asbestos diseases like mesothelioma, Congress should be focused on ensuring justice for the victims and supporting efforts to protect public health and safety. Instead, the asbestos industry and the U.S Chamber of Commerce have orchestrated a calculated campaign to delay and deny justice for dying asbestos victims.”

“The asbestos industry is the only supporter of the FACT Act, and to date, this committee has refused to hear testimony from people who have experienced the ravages of asbestos diseases. Americans should be outraged that this markup went forward without thoughtful consideration of the people who will shoulder the entire burden of this one-sided bill – asbestos victims and their families”
