AAJ Statement on Omnibus Provision to Increase Consumer Protections in Cosmetics

December 20,2022

Washington, DC — The following is a statement from American Association for Justice CEO Linda Lipsen on inclusion of the Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act in the federal appropriations omnibus legislation:

“At long last, Congress is poised to pass legislation that will modernize the safety of cosmetics and provide the American public with greater consumer protections. As advocates for patients with cancer obtained by exposure to talc and asbestos, our goal is to see the substances permanently banned. This legislation, however, is a solid step forward.

“We are especially heartened to see the provision requiring the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) to set testing standards for talc. Once these stronger tests are in place, if a product containing talc is found to be contaminated with asbestos, it could then be removed from shelves. We will continue to work with the FDA, the courts, and Congress to protect the public from harmful cosmetics products.”
