President Obama and Senate Must Promptly Fill Supreme Court Vacancy

Consumers' Access to Justice is at Stake in Nomination

February 19,2016

Washington, DC—The following is a statement from American Association for Justice (AAJ) CEO Linda Lipsen in response to the death of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia and the present vacancy on the court:

“Following the passing of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, President Obama and the Senate must work promptly to fill the vacancy on our nation’s highest court. I applaud the President for promising to act quickly to nominate a replacement, and call on the Senate to fulfill its constitutional responsibility of advice and consent.

The Supreme Court is the final arbiter of Americans’ right to access justice in our civil courts. In recent years, however, too many Americans have found the courthouse doors closed to them when seeking justice. With cases involving fundamental consumer, employment, and civil rights hanging in the balance, the Senate must act swiftly to consider the President’s nominee in order to protect and restore our civil justice system for future generations.”
