Senate Committee Examines Corporate Attempts to Game the Bankruptcy System and Evade Accountability

September 19,2023

Washington, DC — The following is a statement from American Association for Justice CEO Linda Lipsen on the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on "Evading Accountability: Corporate Manipulation of Chapter 11 Bankruptcy":

“Johnson and Johnson knew for decades that their baby powder was filled with cancer-causing poison, yet hid the truth from the American public. Today, they continue to evade accountability by using legal tricks and fake bankruptcies, practices that Congress must end.”

"Two people, David Etheridge and Kimberley Naranjo, contracted mesothelioma from using Johnson & Johnson’s baby powder and previously testified before Congress. Due to J&J’s obstruction and delays, both are now dead and unable to testify or seek accountability.

“We applaud the Senate Judiciary Committee for taking on bankruptcy grifters like J&J and exploring ways to stop this corporate bailout that has harmed tens of thousands of victims of misconduct.”
