Defective design of pelvic mesh product
August/September 2022Virginia Redding, who suffered from pelvic organ prolapse and stress urinary incontinence, underwent implantation of the Supris-Suprapubic Sling System and Novasilk Synthetic Flat Mesh, which contained polypropylene mesh. She developed multiple complications, including pain and infection, and required two explantation procedures to remove eroded mesh. Additionally, she required a procedure to repair her recurrent pelvic organ prolapse.
She continues to suffer from chronic pelvic pain and pressure, painful intercourse, and incontinence, among other problems. Redding, who still has mesh in her pelvis, faces another potential mesh removal surgery.
She sued Coloplast Corp., alleging strict liability design defect, failure to warn, negligent misrepresentation, and fraudulent concealment.
The jury awarded $2.5 million.
