Washington state AG suit against JUUL results in consent decree
June 7, 2022The state of Washington filed suit against JUUL Labs, Inc., asserting that, among other things, the company had violated the state’s consumer protection law by selling its products without displaying their nicotine content; targeting ad campaigns to youth; and selling products without an appropriate license. The state attorney general argued that JUUL had designed and marketed its products to appeal to underage consumers and deceived consumers about the addictive nature of its products.
Suit resolved in a consent decree requiring the defendant to pay $22.5 million over the next four years. Additionally, JUUL must cease unlawful conduct and implement corporate reforms, including stopping social media promotion, conducting a strict secret shopper program, and confirming the age of consumers who purchase JUUL products.
