Former welder develops mesothelioma

September 6, 2022

William Walker worked as a welder and pipefitter in the 1960s and 70s. During this time, he was exposed to asbestos-containing gaskets and thermal pipe insulation at numerous chemical and power plants. He also worked in the vicinity of others who were handling asbestos-containing products, causing him to breathe in asbestos dust. Now 77, he has been diagnosed as having Stage IV mesothelioma, which has necessitated treatment such as immunotherapy. His medical expenses were over $162,100.

Walker sued multiple entities, including former employer Level 3 Holdings, Inc., premises owners, and product sellers, alleging negligence and failure to provide a reasonably safe workplace, among other claims.

The plaintiff settled with 10 defendants before trial. The case then proceeded against Level 3 Holdings. The jury awarded approximately $36.7 million, apportioning fault among 21 entities.

Citation: Walker v. Anco Insulations, Inc., No. 2021-07060 (La. Dist. Ct. Orleans Parish July 20, 2022).

Plaintiff counsel: AAJ members David R. Cannella and Kristopher Thompson, both of New Orleans; and Christopher Colley, Dallas.
