Inadequate treatment of traumatic injuries

September/October 2020

Christopher Gramer suffered traumatic injuries, including a lacerated liver and a fractured pelvis, after being involved in a motorcycle crash. A code trauma-level-two was activated for Gramer, who was taken to Advocate Sherman Hospital. Despite treatment at the hospital, Gramer died that day of hemorrhagic shock. He is survived by his wife and two adult children.

Gramer’s wife, on behalf of his estate, sued the hospital, alleging its employees had negligently failed to timely diagnose and treat Gramer’s traumatic injuries, designate him as a code trauma-level-one, and adequately monitor his vital signs.

The parties settled for $725,000.
