Excessive administration of Pitocin during labor, failure to properly supervise resident

July/August 2022

Rachel Harris was admitted to Truman Medical Center to deliver her child. She was administered Pitocin over the course of approximately six hours and was attended by family physician Kelly Sandri and a resident physician. Harris’s baby suffered hypoxic-ischemic brain damage resulting in cerebral palsy.

Harris, on her daughter’s behalf, sued the hospital and Sandri, alleging excessive administration of Pitocin led to the child’s birth injury. The plaintiff also alleged that Sandri had not properly supervised the resident, who failed to respond to signs of Pitocin overdose on the fetal monitor.

The plaintiff settled with the hospital for an undisclosed amount. The jury awarded $25.4 million.

Citation: Harris v. Sandri, No. 1816-CV28721 (Mo. Cir. Ct. Jackson Cty. Mar. 30, 2022).
