Inadequate treatment of postpartum hemorrhage
July/August 2022After Doe, 35, delivered her third child at a hospital, she continued to hemorrhage. Her attending obstetrician ordered exploratory surgery to determine the cause of the bleeding and transferred Doe to an operating room. The obstetrician allegedly did not order blood beforehand. Additionally, the attending anesthesiologist allegedly did not order emergency release blood for Doe, despite her continued bleeding.
During the surgery, Doe coded. Medical staff were able to resuscitate her, but she suffered catastrophic brain damage. She died the next day and is survived by her fiancé and three minor children.
Doe’s estate sued the obstetrician, anesthesiologist, and the hospital, alleging improper treatment of postpartum bleeding. The plaintiff asserted the defendants had failed to ensure timely delivery of typed and cross-matched blood for Doe. Suit did not claim lost income.
The parties settled for $950,000.
