Failure to timely diagnose internal bleeding after bariatric surgery

May/June 2022

Doe, 68, underwent a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. After the procedure, she suffered hypotension and internal bleeding, which went undiagnosed for several hours. As a result, she suffered hemorrhagic shock, multiple cardiac arrests, organ failure, and brain death.

Doe is survived by her husband and three children.

Suit against the hospital, general surgeon, and treating nurses alleged improper monitoring, failure to communicate regarding Doe’s status, and failure to timely diagnose her postoperative bleed and transfer her to the ICU or back to the operating room.

Suit did not claim lost income.

The parties reached a settlement in the case in the amount of $600,000.
