Negligent application of medical adhesive

November/December 2022

Doe, 3, fell at home, striking her forehead. When Doe’s forehead wound did not stop bleeding, her parents took her to the ER at Holy Redeemer Hospital. There, physician assistant Christine McCormick allegedly attempted to close Doe’s wound by applying medical cyanoacrylate adhesive, or, “Super Glue.” As she allegedly applied the glue, McCormick infused adhesive directly into Doe’s left eye. An alleged attempt to remove the glue only dispersed it across Doe’s entire eye, which became glued shut. As a result, Doe’s eye remained shut for approximately six days. She lost half of the eyelashes on her left eye and is now afraid of medical personnel.

Doe’s parents, on her behalf, sued Holy Redeemer Health System, alleging vicarious, respondeat superior, and corporate liability.

The parties settled for an undisclosed amount.
