Jury awards damages to hospital patient allegedly videotaped by nurse
September/October 2022In December 2019, Pennsylvania’s attorney general announced that former UPMC Carlisle nurse Michael Bragg had secretly videotaped more than 200 patients while they sought treatment at the facility. Bragg was criminally charged with child pornography.
Doe was one of the patients recorded while she was a college student. She sued Bragg, alleging intentional infliction of emotional distress. The hospital was also named in a class action suit, to which Doe is a party.
The plaintiff, who suffers from conditions that necessitate numerous medical appointments, has experienced emotional distress as a result of her experience.
After Bragg defaulted, a jury awarded $90,000. The case against the hospital is pending.
