Failure to reconcile patient’s medications
January 23, 2024Doe suffered a hemorrhage after undergoing brain surgery. Although he was returned to surgery, he was left with neurological deficits on his right side. His neurological condition improved, but he did not recover fully. He died approximately one year later from his underlying brain cancer. Doe is survived by his wife.
Suit against Doe’s treating providers alleged that they failed to reconcile Doe’s medications to look for any contraindications. Doe had been prescribed the blood thinner Plavix, but the defendants failed to identify this in his medical record. As a result, Doe did not discontinue the Plavix before his surgery.
The parties settled before trial for $550,000.
